Which exterior door to choose

Which exterior door to choose. Choosing the right external door for your home is one of the key decisions in its construction and finishing. It is the door that primarily affects the aesthetics of the exterior facade of the building, which is why they should be as consistent as possible with other external elements, such as the color of the facade or window joinery. In addition, the front door has a huge impact on the energy efficiency of the building, which in turn translates into the amount of heating bills. There are several key aspects to consider when choosing the right entrance door.

Types of doors – choice

You can find various types of external doors on the market, which are offered by their manufacturers. Their goods are a real challenge. There are, among others:

Metal doors -they are most often made of such metals, aluminum or steel. They have a frame made of the same material as themselves. The sash itself is made of profiles equipped with an appropriate insert. Depending on the requirements, it is the customer who most often decides on the type of filling. They are most often finished with powder coating. Thanks to whether they are evenly covered with paint, regardless of their roughness. Depending on the model, you can sleep metal doors finished in gloss or mat. Doors of this type have one major advantage, they are extremely resistant to mechanical and atmospheric factors. Therefore, they are the most frequently recommended doors from the type of external security doors. Their disadvantages, however, are poor acoustic and thermal parameters.

Wooden exterior doors is the most common type of door, and also the most frequently chosen by customers. For their production, wood from deciduous trees such as oak, mahogany or conifers such as pine or spruce is most often chosen. It is important that they are made of good quality wood. Wooden door frames are also made of the same material, solid wood, but there are also models with metal frames. The door can be filled with both thermal insulation material such as polyurethane foam and polystyrene. In cheaper models, however, wood-based materials are used as filling.

The door finish is most often obtained by polishing and impregnating the wood, sometimes the door can be covered with various types of veneers or vinyl, as well as painted with wood paints or enamel.Their advantage is, above all, very good thermal insulation, which allows more heat to be kept inside the building. They also do very well with sound insulation. Their disadvantages are primarily the lack of mechanical resistance. Under the influence of weather conditions, over time, they may start to turn off and begin to peel off. Additionally, they are not very effective anti-burglary protection. When buying them, it is worth taking an interest in the quality of the wood from which they were made. The wood used for their production should be properly dried and free from knots.

PVC exterior doors -are made of polyvinyl chloride and almost always have frames made of the same material. Additionally reinforced with steel inserts. The very leaf of this type of door is made of embossed profiles, which are then reinforced. PVC used in the production of doors is a material that is specially strengthened, which gives it adequate resistance. Sealing in PVC external doors is usually made with polyurethane foam. However, their fillings may be, depending on the model, MDF, glass, PVC panels and even metal. Their finish is foil, which gives it an appropriate free and color. It is hot glued to the door, which makes it more durable.

You can also find doors of this type painted with paints on the market. The disadvantage of this type of door is their poor mechanical strength, which at the same time does not provide any anti-burglary protection. However, when it comes to thermal and acoustic parameters, they are the best option among the options mentioned. In addition, this type of door is very easy to keep clean, without the slightest effort.

Choosing the right door to your building, however, in addition to the materials, pay attention to their width, it is assumed that they should not be narrower than 90 centimeters, thanks to such dimensions they will allow two people to pass freely. Their height should, however, reach two meters, so that everyone can freely pass through the threshold of the house without bending down. It is also worth paying attention to the thermal parameters that can most often be found on the door label. They will be responsible for keeping heat in the house. Another issue is sound impermeability. Especially if the building is located on a busy street or in a noisy area, the lower the decibel parameter on the label, the better, as less noise from outside will reach the inside. The optimal solution is to buy a door with a permeability below 30 decibels.
